SASSA Appeal: How to Appeal a Declined SRD R370 Grant

Published: Updated: · 6 min read · Last verified against the official SASSA SRD portal: March 2026

Appeal is submitted online through the official SRD appeals platform. To lodge an appeal, the applicant must enter their 13-digit South African ID number and the mobile number used during the SRD application, then select the specific month that was declined and submit the appeal for review.

SRD appeals are assessed per month, not once-off. This means an appeal must be submitted separately for each declined month where the applicant disagrees with the decision. Appeals are reviewed independently and not by SASSA. If an appeal is successful, payment is made only for the month that was appealed.

SASSA Appeal Process on the Official Appeals Website

An SRD appeal is submitted online through the official government appeals platform.

Disclaimer: Appeals are not handled at SASSA offices and cannot be done via WhatsApp or USSD.

Step 1: Confirm That You Are Eligible to Appeal

  • Before starting, make sure all of the following are true:
    1. You applied for the SRD R370 grant if not? Apply here
    2. Your application status shows “Declined” for a specific month
    3. You disagree with the reason for the decline
    4. You are submitting the appeal within the allowed time period

If these conditions are met, you are allowed to proceed with an appeal.

Step 2: Open the Official SRD Appeals Website

  • Use a secure browser and go to the official SRD DSD Appeals website. This is the only authorised platform for SRD appeals.
Important
  1. Do not use third-party websites or social media links
  2. Appeals submitted anywhere else are not recognised

Step 3: Enter Your Personal Details

  • On the appeals page, you will be asked to provide:
    1. Your 13-digit South African ID number
    2. The mobile number you used when applying for SRD
    3. South African ID number and mobile phone details required to submit a SASSA SRD appeal
    4. These details must match SASSA’s records. If they do not match, you will not be able to continue.
    • Step 4: Select the Month You Are Appealing For

SRD decisions are made per month, not once-off.

      This means:

      • You must select the specific month that shows as declined
      • If you were declined in more than one month, each month requires its own appeal

Step 5: Review and Update Your Contact Information

      • Before submitting the appeal, the system allows you to review your contact details. You should:
        1. Check your mobile number carefully
        2. Update your details if they are incorrect
        3. Save the changes before continuing

      This is important because:

      • Appeal outcomes are sent electronically
      • Payments, if approved, rely on correct contact details

Step 6: Read and Accept the Declaration and Consent

You will be required to confirm that you have:

      • Read the declaration
      • Accepted the consent terms

Without accepting these terms, the appeal cannot be submitted. Take a moment to read them, then confirm to proceed.

Step 7: Submit Your SRD Appeal

      Once all details are confirmed:

      • Click the “Submit” button
      • Wait for the confirmation message on the screen

      A successful submission means:

      • Your appeal has been lodged with the Independent Tribunal
      • No further action is required from you at this stage

Keep a record or screenshot of the confirmation if possible.

What This Process Does (and Does Not Do)

      This appeal process:

      • Sends your case for independent review
      • Rechecks your eligibility for the selected month
      • Does not guarantee approval

Instructions: The appeal is not reviewed by SASSA directly. It is assessed independently based on available data.

Time Limits to Submit an Appeal (30 to 90 Days Rule)

There is a strict time window for submitting an SRD appeal. Once your SRD status shows “Declined”, the appeal must be lodged.

  • No earlier than 30 days, and
  • No later than 90 days from the date of the declined decision

If you miss this window:

  • The decline for that specific month becomes final
  • You lose the right to challenge the decision through the appeal process

For this reason, it is strongly advised to submit your appeal as soon as you receive the rejection notification, rather than waiting.

⏳ How Long Appeals Take to Be Finalised (60–90 Days)

After submission, SRD appeals are not decided immediately. The standard processing timeframe is:

  • 📆 60 to 90 days from the date the appeal is lodged

During this period:

  • Your appeal is reviewed by the Independent Tribunal
  • Verification checks are repeated using multiple databases
  • No interim updates are usually provided

Delays do not mean your appeal has failed. The review process is structured and takes time.

What to Do Before You Submit an SRD Appeal

Before lodging an SRD appeal, it is important to prepare properly. Many appeals fail not because the applicant is ineligible, but because basic checks were skipped before submission.

Check the Decline Reason Carefully

When your SRD status shows as declined, a reason is usually provided. Common examples include:

  1. Income reflected above the threshold
  2. Bank verification issues
  3. Alternative income detected
  4. Identity or contact verification problems

Understanding the reason helps you decide whether:

  • An appeal is appropriate, or
  • The decline is likely correct for that month

Appeals are meant for cases where you disagree with the decision, not where eligibility clearly was not met

Make Sure Your Personal Details Are Correct

Before starting the appeal, ensure that:

  1. Your ID number is correct
  2. Your mobile number matches the one used during application
  3. You still have access to that mobile number

If your details do not match the system records, the appeal process may not proceed.

Understand That Reapplying and Appealing Are Different

Many applicants confuse these two actions.

  • Reapplying is used when your details or circumstances have changed
  • Appealing is used when you believe the decline decision for a specific month is incorrect

If your status is declined for a month and you believe you were eligible, an appeal is the correct step.

Prepare for a Month-by-Month Process

If you were declined for more than one month:

'
  • Each month requires its own appeal
  • Submitting one appeal does not cover other declined months

Failing to appeal for a specific month means the original decision for that month remains in place.

What Happens After You Submit an SRD Appeal

After you submit your appeal successfully, the process moves out of your hands for a period of time. After submission:

  • Your appeal is forwarded to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA)
  • The appeal is not reviewed by SASSA

The Tribunal operates independently and reassesses the decision using available verification data.

No Further Action Is Required From You Immediately

At this stage:

  • You do not need to resubmit documents
  • You do not need to visit a SASSA office
  • You do not need to contact the Tribunal unless requested

Tip» Submitting multiple appeals for the same month does not speed up the process.

Status Will Not Change Immediately

After submission:

  • Your SRD status may continue to show “Declined” for some time
  • This is normal and does not mean the appeal has failed

Check Your SRD Appeal Status

After submitting your appeal, ITSAA does not send regular updates. The only way to know whether your appeal is still being reviewed or a decision has been made is to check the official appeals portal directly.

When You Are Allowed to Appeal Your SRD Application

You are allowed to submit an SRD appeal if all of the following apply:

  • You applied for the SRD R370 grant
  • Your application status shows “Declined” for a specific month
  • You disagree with the reason for the decline
  • You submit the appeal within the allowed timeframe after rejection

You cannot appeal:

  • If your application is still pending
  • If you were approved for the month
  • If you miss the appeal submission window

Appeals are designed for declined decisions only.

Can You Appeal More Than Once? (Monthly Declines Explained)

Yes. You can appeal more than once, but only under specific conditions.

Because SRD decisions are made monthly:

  • Each declined month is treated as a separate decision
  • Each declined month requires its own appeal

For example:

  • If you were declined in March and April, you must submit:
    • One appeal for March
    • One separate appeal for April

Submitting one appeal does not cover multiple months.

If you do not appeal a declined month:

  • The original decision for that month remains in place
  • You cannot receive payment for that month later

This is why it is important to appeal as soon as you receive a declined notification.

Will You Be Paid If Your SRD Appeal Is Successful?

Yes, but only under specific conditions.

If your appeal is successful:

  • The Independent Tribunal instructs SASSA to initiate payment
  • Payment is made only for the month you appealed
  • Payment follows the standard SRD payment process and timelines

A successful appeal does not automatically approve future months. Each month continues to be assessed separately.

What Happens If Your SRD Appeal Is Declined Again

If the Independent Tribunal confirms the original decision:

  • The decline for that specific month stands
  • No further internal appeal is available for that month

This outcome means:

  • No SRD payment will be made for that period
  • You may still qualify in future months if your circumstances change

A declined appeal does not permanently disqualify you from SRD.

Is the SRD Appeal Decision Final?

Yes. The decision made by the Independent Tribunal is considered final within the SRD appeal system.

Once a decision is issued:

  • There is no second internal appeal
  • The matter is regarded as closed for that month

This finality applies only to the specific month that was appealed.

When You Can Approach the High Court After an SRD Appeal

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of the appeal, there is one further option available outside the SRD system.

You may:

  • Apply for a judicial review through the High Court
  • Do so under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA)
  • Submit the application within 180 days of the appeal decision

This is a legal process and is separate from SASSA and the Tribunal.
