SASSA SRD Status Declined – What It Means, Why It Happens, and What to Do Next
Published: · Updated: · 6 min read . Last verified against the official SASSA SRD portal: February 2026
If your SRD status shows Declined, your application did not meet one or more eligibility criteria for that specific month. It is not a permanent ban on receiving the grant, each month is assessed independently, and a decline for one month does not affect another.
More importantly: Many declines are errors. Before you accept a declined result, you need to understand exactly why it happened because the right response depends entirely on whether that reason is valid or not.
You have 90 days from the date of decline to submit an appeal for that month. Miss this window and you permanently lose the right to appeal for that month. Act quickly.
This page explains every reason to decline reason, what it means, and what your next step should be.
Step One — Read Your Decline Reason First
When your status shows Declined, a reason is always displayed alongside it on the portal. This reason is everything — it tells you whether the decline is correct or an error, and it determines your next step entirely.
If you are not sure what reason was shown, use our status check tool and note the exact wording before continuing.
🔒 Your privacy is protected. We do not collect, store, or process your ID number or phone number. When you use our tool, you are checking your status directly on the official SASSA portal
Do not guess. Do not assume. Do not appeal blindly.
Read the exact wording shown, then find it in the list below. 👇
All SRD Decline Reasons Explained
- Alternative Income Source Identified / Means Test Failed
What it means: SASSA's automated system detected deposits into a bank account registered to your ID number that exceed the R624 monthly income threshold. This is the most common decline reason.
Is it valid? It depends on what caused those deposits.
- If you received a salary, wages, or regular income above R624, the decline is correct for that month. You did not qualify. If your income has since changed, your next monthly assessment may return a different result.
- If the deposits were a once-off gift, a family member's money, a loan repayment, or a refund, the decline may be an error and you can appeal with proof.
- If you use a shared or joint bank account, deposits from the other account holder count against you. Switch to a personal account in your name only.
📂 Appeal or not? Appeal if the flagged deposits were not genuine income. Do not appeal if you genuinely received more than R624 in income that month.
Alternative Income Declined SolutionFix this decline: SRD Alternative Income Declined — how to fix Do - Identity Verification Failed
What it means: SASSA could not match the personal details on your application, name, surname, ID number, against Department of Home Affairs (DHA) records. A mismatch, however small, causes an automatic decline.
From September 2025, this also includes biometric identity verification (eKYC), if you have not completed facial verification or your biometric scan could not be matched, your application will be declined under this reason.
Is it valid? Rarely. This is almost always an error, either a typo in your application or an outdated record at DHA.
👉 What to do: Check that every detail on your application matches your ID document exactly, including the order of your names and any middle names. If your DHA records are genuinely incorrect, visit your nearest Home Affairs office to correct them first, then update your SASSA application. If the decline is linked to eKYC, you need to complete your biometric verification.
See our SASSA Identity Verification guide → for the full process.
📂 Appeal or not? Yes, appeal while simultaneously correcting the underlying mismatch. (See: SRD Identity Verification Failed, What to Do)
Verify Your IdentityFix this decline: SRD Identity Verification Failed — Meaning and what to do - Active SASSA Grant Already Registered
What it means: SASSA's database shows you are already receiving another social grant such as an Old Age Pension, Disability Grant, or War Veterans Grant. You cannot receive the SRD grant at the same time as these.
Note: Receiving the Child Support Grant as a caregiver does not disqualify you from the SRD grant, the SRD and Child Support Grant can be received simultaneously.
Is it valid? Usually yes, if you are registered for another grant, this decline is correct. If you believe the record is wrong (for example, a grant you no longer receive is still showing as active), contact your nearest SASSA office to have it corrected.
📂 Appeal or not? Only if the grant shown is inactive or was incorrectly registered. Otherwise, this decline is correct and cannot be appealed.
Existing SASSA Grant meaningFix this decline: Existing SASSA Grant meaning And How to fix - UIF Registered / Receiving UIF Benefits
What it means: The Department of Labour's database shows you are registered for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and either receiving benefits or still within an active claim period.
Is it valid? Not always. UIF records are not always updated promptly. If your UIF claim has ended but is still showing as active in the system, your SRD application will be declined incorrectly.
👉 What to do: Contact the Department of Labour to confirm whether your UIF status is still active. If it is not, request a letter confirming your UIF claim is closed. Use this documentation when submitting your appeal.
📂 Appeal or not? Yes, if you are not actively receiving UIF. Contact the Department of Labour first, then appeal with documentation.
Solve UIF RegisteredFix this decline: SRD Declined UIF Registered — What to Do - NSFAS Beneficiary
What it means: SASSA's check against the National Student Financial Aid Scheme found an active NSFAS record in your name. NSFAS funding is treated as income.
Is it valid? Check whether your NSFAS record is current. If you no longer study and NSFAS funding has stopped, an outdated record in the system can trigger this decline incorrectly.
👉 What to do: Log in to your NSFAS account to verify your current status. If the record is outdated, contact NSFAS to have it updated, then appeal with confirmation.
📂 Appeal or not? Yes, if you are no longer an active NSFAS beneficiary and can prove it.
Solve Declined NSFAS RegisteredFix this decline: SRD Declined NSFAS Beneficiary — What to Do - Registered as a Government Employee / GEPF Record Found
What it means: SASSA found a record in the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) or another government employment database suggesting you are or were a government employee.
Is it valid? It may be. A GEPF record does not always mean you are currently employed, it can reflect past employment. If you are no longer a government employee, this record may be causing an incorrect decline.
👉 What to do: Check your employment status with your former employer or the GEPF. If the record is outdated, request documentation confirming your employment has ended and appeal with that evidence.
📂 Appeal or not? Yes, if you are no longer employed by the government.
Solve Declined Government EmployeeFix this decline: SRD Declined Government Employee — What to Do - Age Criteria Not Met
What it means: The SRD grant is only available to South African citizens, permanent residents, and recognised refugees between the ages of 18 and 59. If your age falls outside this range, your application is automatically declined.
Is it valid? Usually yes. If you are under 18 or 60 and older, you do not qualify for the SRD grant. If you are 60 or older, you may qualify for the Old Age Pension instead, visit your nearest SASSA office.
📂 Appeal or not? Only if you believe your date of birth on the system is recorded incorrectly. Correct it with DHA first, then appeal.
Age not Qualify?Fix this decline: Age not Qualify - meaning and next steps - SASSA Debtor — Previous Overpayment Owed
What it means: SASSA's records show you owe money from a previous grant overpayment. This can happen when a grant continued to be paid after a beneficiary was no longer eligible.
Is it valid? Check whether you received any overpayment communication from SASSA. If the debt is recorded correctly, you need to make arrangements to settle it before your application can proceed. If you believe the record is incorrect, dispute it at your nearest SASSA office.
📂 Appeal or not? Visit a SASSA office first to clarify the debt before appealing.
SASSA Debtor StatusFix this decline: SASSA Debtor Status — How to Resolve - Flagged by SAFPS (South African Fraud Prevention Service)
What it means: Your ID number or personal details have been flagged in the South African Fraud Prevention Service database, a national fraud-alert system used by SASSA and financial institutions.
Is it valid? You may not even know you are listed. This can happen if your identity was compromised or used fraudulently without your knowledge.
👉 What to do: Contact SAFPS directly at 0860 101 248 or visit safps.org.za to find out why you are listed and how to dispute the record. This needs to be resolved with SAFPS directly before your SASSA application can proceed.
📂 Appeal or not? Resolve the SAFPS listing first. Once cleared, appeal or reapply.
SAFPS FlaggedFix this decline: SAFPS Flagged — How to Clear Your Record - Deceased Record at DHA
What it means: The Department of Home Affairs has recorded you as deceased. While rare, this does happen due to administrative errors — particularly if you share a name or ID with someone who has passed away, or if a clerical error was made.
Is it valid? No, this is always an error if you are alive and applying.
👉 What to do: Visit your nearest Department of Home Affairs office in person and bring your ID document. You will need to complete a formal correction process. Once DHA updates your record, contact SASSA and appeal.
📂 Appeal or not? Yes, but resolve the DHA record first. This cannot be fixed online.

Before You Appeal — Ask Yourself This
Is the decline reason valid for that month?
If yes, the decline is correct. Do not appeal. If your circumstances change in the following month (for example, you no longer receive income above R624), a new monthly assessment may produce a different result. No action is needed for the declined month.
If not, the decline is an error. You have grounds to appeal. Act within 90 days.
Not sure how to appeal? For the complete process, read our step-by-step SRD appeal guide → before submitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does declined mean I can never get the SRD grant again?
No. Each month is assessed independently. A decline for one month has no effect on the next month's assessment. If your circumstances change, for example, you no longer have income above R624, you may be approved in a future month.
Can I appeal every decline reason?
Not all declines are worth appealing. Appeal only if you believe the reason shown does not apply to your actual situation. If the reason is accurate, appealing will not succeed and you should rather focus on the next monthly cycle.
How long does an appeal take?
ITSAA typically takes between 60 and 90 days to review an appeal. You can monitor the status on the appeals portal. If there is no update after 90 days, contact the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11.
My income exceeded R624 only because of a once-off transfer, can I appeal?
Yes. Once-off payments such as a gift, loan repayment, or family support can trigger an incorrect means test decline. Appeal and explain clearly what the deposit was, and provide proof if available.
Can I fix the issue and reapply for the same month?
No. Once a month is declined, you cannot reapply for that same month. You can either appeal the declined month or wait for the next monthly cycle to be assessed again.
What if I miss the 90-day appeal window?
In limited circumstances, ITSAA may accept a late appeal if you submit an Application for Condonation for Late Appeal with a convincing reason for the delay. This is not guaranteed, always aim to appeal well within the 90-day window.
