SRD Declined: UIF Registered — What It Means and How to Fix
Published: · 4 min read · Written by: Themba Matlou
If your SRD status shows Declined: Receiving UIF benefits or UIF Registered, SASSA's automated check found a record in the Department of Labour's UIF database linked to your ID number. Because UIF is considered government financial support, receiving it alongside the SRD R370 grant is not permitted.
This is one of the most commonly incorrect decline reasons. Many applicants are flagged as UIF registered even though they are no longer receiving any UIF payments, because UIF records are not always updated promptly when a claim ends.
Is This Decline Valid?
If you are actively receiving UIF payments, the decline is correct for that month. You cannot receive UIF benefits and the SRD grant simultaneously. If your UIF claim ends in a future month, your next SRD assessment may return a different result.
If your UIF claim has ended but is still showing as active, this is an incorrect decline. Outdated UIF records in the Department of Labour's system cause SASSA to flag you even after your benefits have stopped. This is the most common cause of this decline and it can be fixed.
If you have never claimed UIF, you may have been registered for UIF by a previous employer without your knowledge. Employers are required to register employees for UIF contributions, so even brief or informal employment can result in a UIF record existing in your name.
How to Fix It
- Step 1: Confirm your UIF status Contact the Department of Labour directly to find out what their records show for your ID number.
- Call the Department of Labour on 0800 843 843 (toll-free)
- Or visit your nearest Department of Labour office in person with your ID document
- Ask specifically whether your UIF record shows as active or closed, and request a written UIF status letter confirming your current status
- Step 2: Request a UIF record update if needed If your claim has ended but is still showing as active, ask the Department of Labour to update your record. This correction needs to happen at their end before SASSA's next check will clear.
- Step 3: Gather your documents for the appeal While the correction is being processed, begin preparing your appeal. The following documents strengthen your case significantly:
- UIF status letter confirming you are not actively receiving benefits
- Bank statements for the past 3 to 6 months showing no UIF deposits
- UIF termination or rejection letter if applicable
- Step 4: Submit your appeal Do not wait for the UIF correction to fully process before appealing, submit your appeal immediately so you do not lose that month's window. State clearly in your appeal that you are not actively receiving UIF benefits and attach your supporting documents.
What About Future Months?
Once the Department of Labour updates your UIF record, SASSA's next monthly check should no longer flag you for this reason. You do not need to do anything on the SASSA portal itself, the correction happens through the Department of Labour's database and SASSA's system picks it up automatically during the next assessment cycle.
If you were declined for more than one month due to this reason, each month requires its own appeal submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
I was only employed briefly - can UIF still cause this decline?
Yes. Employers are legally required to register employees for UIF, even for short-term or part-time work. A UIF record can exist in your name even if you never personally claimed benefits. Contact the Department of Labour to confirm your record status.
My UIF benefits ended months ago — why is it still causing a decline?
UIF records are not updated in real time. A claim that ended months ago may still show as active in the database until the Department of Labour processes the closure. Requesting a status letter and record update is the only way to resolve this.
Do I need to visit the Department of Labour in person?
Not necessarily, you can call 0800 843 843 first to check your status and request a letter. However, if the issue is not resolved over the phone, visiting in person with your ID document is the most reliable way to get the record corrected and obtain written confirmation.
Will my SRD automatically be approved once UIF is corrected?
No. Correcting the UIF record fixes the blocker for future monthly assessments. To recover payment for months already declined, you must appeal each affected month separately.
