SRD Declined: Already Receiving a SASSA Grant — What It Means and What to Do
Published: · Updated: · 5 min read . Written by: Themba Matlou
If your SRD status shows Declined: Already Receiving a SASSA Grant, SASSA's database found an active social grant registered in your name. The SRD R370 is intended for adults who have no other government financial support, receiving another SASSA grant in your own name disqualifies you from receiving both simultaneously.
Before accepting this decline, verify whether the grant record is current and accurate. An outdated or inactive record can trigger this decline incorrectly.
Which Grants Cause This Decline
This decline is triggered when SASSA finds any of the following registered and active in your name:
- Older Persons Grant
- Disability Grant
- War Veterans Grant
- Grant-in-Aid
Important exception: Receiving the Child Support Grant as a caregiver does not disqualify you from the SRD grant. These two grants can be received at the same time because the Child Support Grant is paid on behalf of a child, not for the applicant themselves.
Is This Decline Valid?
- If you are actively receiving one of the grants listed above: the decline is correct. You do not qualify for the SRD grant while receiving another SASSA grant. No appeal will succeed while that grant remains active.
- If you are no longer receiving that grant: the decline may be an error. Grant records in SASSA's system are not always updated immediately when a grant ends or is cancelled. An outdated active record will trigger this decline even if you stopped receiving the grant months ago.
- If you never applied for or received that grant: this is a more serious issue. Someone may have applied for a grant using your ID number without your knowledge, or a data error may have linked another person's grant to your record. Contact SASSA immediately.
What to Do
- Step 1: Confirm which grant is showing, Call the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11 and ask which grant is recorded as active against your ID number. Note the grant type and the status shown.
- Step 2: If the grant is genuinely inactive, Visit your nearest SASSA office in person with your ID document. Request that the inactive grant record be updated or removed from your profile. Ask for written confirmation once the correction is made.
- Step 3: If the grant record is fraudulent, Report it immediately to SASSA's fraud hotline on 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantsEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. You may also need to visit your nearest SASSA office and your nearest police station to log a fraud report.
- Step 4: Check your SRD status after correction. Once the incorrect record has been resolved, your next monthly SRD assessment should clear this decline reason. Allow a few days for the system to update after the correction is made.
Should You Appeal?
Only if the grant record is incorrect. If an inactive or fraudulent grant is causing the decline, appeal the affected month while simultaneously correcting the record. State clearly in your appeal that the grant shown is no longer active and provide any documentation confirming this.
Do not appeal if you are genuinely receiving one of the grants listed above, the decline is correct and the appeal will not succeed.
You have 90 days from the date of decline to submit your appeal.

I receive the Child Support Grant — does that mean I cannot get SRD?
No. The Child Support Grant is paid for a child in your care, not for you personally. Receiving it as a caregiver does not affect your SRD eligibility.
My Disability Grant was cancelled — why is my SRD still declined for this reason?
SASSA's database may not have been updated yet. Visit your nearest SASSA office with proof that your Disability Grant is no longer active and request a record correction. Then appeal the declined SRD month.
Can I receive both the Older Persons Grant and SRD when I turn 60?
No. Once you qualify for the Older Persons Grant at age 60, you no longer qualify for the SRD grant. The two cannot be received simultaneously.
My SRD was declined but I have never received any other SASSA grant — what do I do?
Contact SASSA immediately on 0800601011 to find out which grant is showing against your ID. If it is not yours, report it as a fraudulent record and follow the steps above to have it corrected.
