SASSA SRD R370 Grant Eligibility Requirements — Who Qualifies in 2026

Published: · Updated: · 4 min read . Last verified against the official SASSA SRD portal: March 2026 . Written by: Amy Smit

The SRD R370 grant supports adults who are unemployed or have no other financial support. Eligibility is not a once-off decision, SASSA assesses every application monthly using automated checks across multiple government databases. Your circumstances in one month determine whether you qualify in that month.

This page explains exactly who qualifies, who does not, and how SASSA verifies your eligibility each time you are assessed.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

You must meet all of the following conditions before your application can be approved.

Age

If you are 60 or older, the Older Persons Grant applies to you, not the SRD. If you are under 18, separate social support programmes apply.

Residency

You must be currently living in South Africa. The SRD grant is not paid to individuals residing outside the country, even if they hold valid South African documentation.

Legal Status

You must hold a valid and verifiable legal status recognised by SASSA. The following are accepted:

  • South African citizens
  • Permanent residents
  • Refugees registered with the Department of Home Affairs
  • Asylum seekers with valid permits
  • Approved special permit holders

Your details must match exactly what is recorded at the Department of Home Affairs. Expired documents or mismatched information cause automatic declines.

Income — The Means Test

SASSA applies a means test to determine whether you have sufficient financial support. If your income exceeds R624 per month, you do not qualify for that month.

SASSA does not rely only on what you declare. Your financial activity is automatically cross-checked against:

  • Your bank account deposits
  • SARS income records
  • UIF payment systems
  • NSFAS database
  • Other linked government databases

Once-off or irregular deposits do not automatically result in a decline. What matters is whether your financial activity indicates ongoing income above the threshold. Because this check runs every month, your result can change month to month if your financial circumstances change.

Who Does Not Qualify

If any of the following apply to you for that month, your application will be declined.

Receiving another SASSA social grant: You cannot receive the SRD grant alongside another SASSA grant issued in your own name, including the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, War Veterans Grant, or Grant-in-Aid. The Child Support Grant received as a caregiver does not disqualify you.

Receiving UIF payments: If you are currently receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund payments, you do not qualify. SASSA checks UIF records automatically. If your UIF claim has ended but is still showing as active in the system, this can cause an incorrect decline.

Receiving NSFAS funding: Active NSFAS allowances or stipends are treated as government financial support, which disqualifies you from the SRD grant. If your NSFAS record is outdated and no longer active, an incorrect decline may occur.

Registered as a government employee: If SASSA's database finds an active government employment or GEPF record linked to your ID, your application will be declined. Outdated records from previous government employment can trigger this incorrectly.

Living in a state-funded institution: If you reside in a state-funded institution, such as a correctional facility or state-run care centre, your basic needs are already provided for by the state and you do not qualify for SRD.

How SASSA Verifies Eligibility

Every application is automatically cross-checked across the Department of Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, banking records, and the GEPF. From September 2025, biometric identity verification (eKYC) is also required; your facial scan must be matched against DHA records before payment can be released.

This process runs monthly. A previous decline does not permanently bar you from qualifying, if your circumstances change, a future month may return a different result.

Staying Eligible After Approval

Approval is not permanent. SASSA reassesses your eligibility every month. You must inform SASSA if anything changes that affects your eligibility:

  • You start receiving income above R624 per month
  • You begin receiving another SASSA grant or UIF payments
  • Your contact details or banking details change

Failing to update SASSA when your circumstances change can result in your grant being suspended or a repayment request for amounts received incorrectly.

Ready to Apply?

If you meet all the eligibility requirements above, your next step is to submit your application through the official SASSA SRD portal. Make sure your ID details match DHA records exactly and your bank account is active and in your own name before you begin.
