SRD Status Pending – What It Means and Exactly What to Do

If your SASSA SRD status is showing Pending, this is not a decline. It means SASSA has your application but has not yet posted a final decision for that specific month. Verification is still running.

This page explains what is happening behind the scenes, how long it typically takes, what you should and should not do, and what scams to watch out for while you wait.

What "Pending" Actually Means

The SRD R370 grant is assessed month by month. Every month, SASSA reviews your eligibility fresh, it does not carry over an approval from one month to the next. This means each month can show a different status, and one month can be Pending while another shows Approved or Declined.

When a month shows Pending, it means SASSA received your application for that month and the automated verification process is still running. No final outcome (approved or declined) has been recorded yet.

Check the exact month shown. The SRD portal lists results per month. It is easy to misread results when several months are listed. Always note the month and year displayed next to the Pending label.

What Is Actually Happening While Your Status Is Pending

SASSA does not verify your application in isolation. Every month, your details are cross-referenced across multiple government databases before a result is posted. Understanding this process helps explain why pending can take longer than expected.

Here is what SASSA checks, and who they check with:

DepartmentsWhat They Do
Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Your identity (ID number, full name, and biometrics) must match DHA records exactly. A mismatch or a delay in the DHA system holds the result
SARS (South African Revenue Service) SASSA checks whether you have registered income or tax records that would push you above the R624 monthly income threshold.
UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) If you are registered for UIF and actively receiving benefits, you do not qualify for the SRD grant. SASSA checks this automatically.
NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) Student stipends count as income. SASSA verifies whether you are receiving NSFAS funding.
Your bank SASSA checks your bank account for deposits that might indicate income above the threshold. Only a personal account in your own name is eligible.

How Long Does Pending Last?

SASSA does not publish an official resolution timeframe, but based on how the system works, here is a realistic guide:

If your status has been pending for more than 90 days without any change, that is outside the expected range and worth following up directly with SASSA. Call 0800 60 10 11 and ask specifically about the pending month, quote the month and year when you call.

What You Should and Should Not Do

  • DO:
    • Confirm you are looking at the correct pending month. The portal lists results per month, always note the month and year shown next to the Pending label.
    • Ensure your ID number, name, and surname on your application match your South African ID document and DHA records exactly. Even a single character mismatch can hold a result indefinitely.
    • Ensure your banking details are in your own name and the account is active. A closed or third-party account will block payment processing for that month.
    • Results are posted in batches and your status can change without any notification. Check your SRD status again after a few days before drawing any conclusions.
    • Call 0800 60 10 11 if your status has not changed after the expected timeframe, quote the specific pending month when you call.
  • Do not:
    • Make repeated changes to your application without a confirmed reason. Every update can trigger a new verification check, restarting the clock on that month's result and keeping it pending longer
    • Submit a new application while your existing one is pending, this creates a duplicate and causes further delays
    • Assume pending means declined, these are two entirely separate statuses
    • Use unofficial third-party websites, WhatsApp agents, or social media groups to "fix" your pending status. These cannot access or change your SASSA record, and many are actively fraudulent

What Happens After Pending

Once SASSA completes that month's verification, your status will move to one of three outcomes:

Approved: You qualified for that month. SASSA will assign a payment date. Payments are typically processed in batches during the final week of the month.

Declined: A reason will be displayed on the portal. Read it carefully, then go to our SRD Status Declined guide where every decline reason is listed with the exact steps to follow for each one. Do not take any action before understanding what the reason actually means for your specific situation.

Reapplication Required: A new application is needed for the current period before the review can continue. The process is exactly the same as when you first applied. Follow our SRD Application guide for a step-by-step walkthrough.

Protect Yourself — SRD Scams Targeting "Pending" Applicants

SASSA itself has issued official fraud alerts about scammers specifically targeting beneficiaries whose applications are pending or delayed.

How the scam works: You are contacted via WhatsApp, SMS, or social media by someone claiming to be a "SASSA agent" or a service that can "approve your pending status" for a fee, or by sharing your OTP. Some use websites that look almost identical to the official SASSA portal.

  1. What SASSA has confirmed they will never do:
    • Send unsolicited WhatsApp messages asking for your OTP, ID number, or banking details
    • Ask you to pay a fee to approve or speed up your application
    • Ask for your bank PIN or password under any circumstances
  2. What to watch out for:
    • Any website that is not srd.sassa.gov.za asking for your ID or personal details
    • WhatsApp groups or social media comments offering to "fix" your pending or declined status
    • Messages claiming your grant has increased to amounts like R700 or R900, these are false unless officially announced by the Department of Social Development
    • Anyone asking you to click a link to "verify your identity" via SMS or WhatsApp

What to Say When You Call SASSA

Most people waste their call because they do not know what to ask. Here is a simple script to use when calling 0800 60 10 11 about a pending status:

"Good day. I am calling about my SRD application. My status for [Month] [Year] is showing as Pending. I would like to know whether there is anything outstanding on my application for that month, or whether it is still in normal processing."

Keep a pen handy. Ask for a call reference number and write it down, you will need it if you need to follow up again.

SASSA call centre hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00. Avoid calling at opening time when volumes are highest.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does pending mean my SRD application was declined?

No. Pending and Declined are two separate statuses. Pending means the review for that month is still in progress. A decline is displayed as "Declined" with a specific reason attached. If you see Pending, no final decision has been made yet.

  • Why is my SRD still showing pending after several weeks?

Pending that extends beyond the normal cycle is usually caused by a delay in one of the external database checks, most often with the Department of Home Affairs. If it has been more than 90 days, call 0800 60 10 11, quote the specific pending month, and ask what is outstanding.

  • Can I do anything to make the pending resolve faster?

Not directly, you cannot manually trigger SASSA's verification process. What you can do is ensure there are no blockers on your side: confirm your details match your ID, ensure your banking account is active and in your name, and avoid making unnecessary changes to your application. Unnecessary edits restart verification checks and can keep a month pending for longer.

  • I changed my banking details and now that month is pending, is that normal?

Yes. Any update to your application triggers new verification checks for security reasons. The month you changed your details may take additional time to finalise as those new details are verified.

  • My appeal is also pending, how long does that take?

Appeal reviews are also processed in batches. There is no official published timeline, but re-checking after a week is reasonable. If it stays pending for more than 30 days, contact the call centre and ask specifically about the appealed month's review status.

  • What if my pending status turns into a decline?

Check the reason shown on the portal first. If the reason is valid, the decline is correct and you will need to address that before reapplying. If the reason is incorrect, you have grounds to appeal.
