The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed the social grant payment schedule for August 2026, giving roughly 27 million beneficiaries certainty on when their money will land. As in previous months, permanent grants are paid early in the month and staggered across separate days to ease congestion at pay points.

Once a grant reflects, the funds remain available and can be collected later from bank ATMs or retail pay points such as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Checkers. What the fourth payment day means

SASSA National Spokesperson Dr Paseka Letsatsi has explained that the fourth day, 7 August, is not a general pay day. It applies only to beneficiaries who have been flagged for a grant review or eLife (life certificate) verification. Anyone paid on this day should visit their nearest SASSA office to complete the process — failure to comply can lead to a grant being suspended, and eventually cancelled if left unresolved. SRD R370 grant paid separately

Protest calls: what beneficiaries should know

In mid-July, SASSA responded to videos on social media calling for nationwide pickets, with the Western Cape reported as the likely focal point. The agency says the calls have been driven largely by a well-known TikTok content creator who claims to represent grant beneficiaries and who regularly raises complaints about the application and appeals processes and the rising cost of living for older people. A petition linked to the Pensioners of South Africa argues that the Old Age Grant, while vital, often falls short of daily needs.

SASSA says it respects the constitutional right to peaceful protest and has invited beneficiaries and interest groups to engage directly, calling dialogue the better route to improving services. Crucially for households planning ahead: these are planned pickets, not a payment stoppage — the confirmed August dates above still stand. Marking its 20th year since 2006, the agency added that it is intensifying fraud and eligibility checks to protect the system.

Warning: fake SASSA job adverts circulating

It is part of a wider wave of fake recruitment posts, including earlier scams advertising "Grant Reviews contract workers" and inflated "Finance Clerk" salaries. These adverts are designed to harvest personal details, charge bogus fees, or push people to unsafe links. SASSA stresses that its services are always free — any post asking for payment or personal information to apply is a scam.

How to spot a genuine SASSA vacancy

• It appears on the official SASSA website or a trusted government platform — never a personal TikTok account or unknown blog.
• It includes a reference number, a specific post title and an official government email address.
• It gives clear application instructions and never asks for a fee or your PIN, password or OTP.
• If in doubt, do not share or click. Report the post to SASSA or your nearest police station.
