Postbank Black Card: SASSA Gold Card Replacement Guide
Published: Modified: Last verified: 26 August 2026 Written by: Themba Matlou
SASSA Gold Cards are being phased out and must be replaced with a Postbank Black Card by . The swap is free and needs only a valid South African ID or temporary ID. You can do it at a Postbank service point or at selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores. This does not affect the SRD R370 grant — SRD is paid by bank transfer or cash-send, not on a SASSA card.

The Postbank Black Card is the replacement bank card for South African social grant beneficiaries who currently receive their grant on a SASSA Gold Card. The migration is run by the South African Postbank as part of a card replacement programme that began in September 2024. Once the migration closes, Gold Cards stop working at ATMs and retailers, and beneficiaries who have not switched may face a delay in accessing their grant money.
- Deadline:

Does the Black Card Deadline Affect My SRD R370 Grant?
No. The SRD R370 grant is not paid on a SASSA card, so the Gold Card deadline does not affect it. The Social Relief of Distress grant is paid directly into your own bank account, or collected in cash at a participating retailer using your ID and cellphone number. There is no SASSA card involved in an SRD payment.
The Gold Card replacement applies only to beneficiaries of the permanent social grants listed below, who receive their money on a physical SASSA-branded card.
| Grant | Uses a SASSA Gold Card? | Action needed |
|---|---|---|
| SRD R370 | No — paid by bank transfer or cash-send | None |
| Older Persons Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
| Disability Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
| Child Support Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
| Foster Child Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
| Care Dependency Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
| War Veterans Grant | Yes, if you collect on a card | Swap before 31 August 2026 |
If your permanent grant is paid into your own bank account rather than onto a SASSA card, you are not part of this migration.

The Postbank Black Card is a bank card issued by the South African Postbank that replaces the older SASSA Gold Card for social grant payments. It works the same way at ATMs and tills, but the card is issued and managed by Postbank rather than by the South African Social Security Agency.
The change was made so that grant payments run through a properly licensed banking entity. Completing the Gold Card replacement has been publicly linked to Postbank's standing in the national grant payment system, which is why the deadline has been treated as firm.
- The card is activated immediately when you collect it
- Any remaining balance on your Gold Card transfers automatically
- You can collect in any province, regardless of where your grant was approved
- You do not need to visit a SASSA office
When Do SASSA Gold Cards Stop Working?
SASSA Gold Cards are being phased out from . Postbank has confirmed the deadline will not be extended. After the migration process concludes, Gold Cards will no longer function at ATMs or retail tills.
The number of beneficiaries still holding a Gold Card has fallen sharply through 2026 as the migration progressed. Figures released at different points in the programme have been revised down over time, and the most recent public reporting before the deadline put the outstanding number in the tens of thousands, with KwaZulu-Natal accounting for the largest share.
Because these figures are updated as migration continues, treat any single number as a snapshot of its publication date rather than a current total.
How to Swap Your Gold Card for a Postbank Black Card
The swap is free and does not require an appointment, a form, or a bank account application. Bring your ID and go.
- Find your nearest site. Dial *120*355# from any cellphone and follow the prompts
- Take a valid South African ID — a green ID book, smart ID card, or a valid temporary ID is accepted
- Go to the site in person. The card is issued to you at the counter
- Set your PIN when prompted. Never share it with anyone, including staff
- Your card is active immediately and any Gold Card balance moves across automatically
There is no charge for the replacement card. If anyone asks you to pay for it, or asks you to complete a form to activate it, it is not a legitimate Postbank card.

Missing the deadline does not cancel your grant. Your grant approval and your monthly payment remain in place. What stops working is the card you use to access the money, which means a disruption in getting to your funds rather than a loss of the grant itself.
Government has also indicated that most Postbank card replacement sites will remain open for a period after the deadline, although beneficiaries are strongly encouraged to switch before rather than rely on that.
If your card has already stopped working, go to a Postbank service point with your ID as soon as possible. Do not go to a SASSA office — SASSA does not issue or replace the card.
How to Spot a Fake Card or a Card Swap Scam
Card migration periods attract fraud. Three checks will protect you.
- A genuine card is clearly marked "Postbank" on the front. If it is not, it is not a real card
- You never complete a form to activate a genuine Postbank Black Card
- Postbank will never ask for your PIN or an OTP as part of the card swap
The replacement is free. Anyone charging you a fee, offering to "book" your card, or asking for your card details over the phone or WhatsApp is running a scam.
Do Not Visit a SASSA Office for Card Problems
Postbank, not SASSA, handles everything related to the card. Going to a SASSA office adds a queue without solving the problem.
Postbank customer service can help with a payment you have not received, PIN queries, a lost or stolen card, a card reissue, and transactions that are being declined. Contact Postbank on 0800 5354 55 or visit a Postbank service point.
Postbank Black Card FAQs
Does the Gold Card deadline affect my SRD R370 grant?
No. The SRD R370 grant is paid into your own bank account or collected in cash at a retailer using your ID and registered cellphone number. No SASSA card is used, so the Gold Card replacement does not apply to SRD beneficiaries.
How much does the Postbank Black Card cost?
Nothing. The replacement is free of charge. If anyone asks you to pay for the card or for a booking, it is a scam.
What documents do I need to swap my card?
A valid South African ID is all that is required. A green ID book, a smart ID card, or a valid temporary ID are all accepted. You do not need a bank statement, a proof of address, or an appointment.
Can I still swap my card after 31 August 2026?
Government has indicated that most Postbank card replacement sites will stay open for a period after the deadline. However, Gold Cards are being phased out from 31 August 2026 and will stop working, so waiting means a disruption in accessing your money. Go as soon as possible.
What happens to the money still on my Gold Card?
Any remaining balance transfers automatically to your new Postbank Black Card. You do not need to withdraw it first.
Will I lose my grant if I miss the deadline?
No. Your grant approval and monthly payment stay in place. What stops working is the card itself, which delays your access to the money until you collect a replacement.
Can I collect my card in a different province?
Yes. You can collect your Postbank Black Card at any active replacement site in any province, regardless of where your grant was originally approved.
Is the deadline going to be extended?
Postbank has publicly stated that the 31 August 2026 deadline will not be extended. Treat any social media post claiming an extension as unverified until it appears on gov.za.
